Research continues to demonstrate that ashwagandha supplementation promotes healthy testosterone levels and attenuates stress-induced cortisol secretion by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis [1, 2].

Notably, in an 8‑week study of adult males found that 600 mg/day of ashwagandha root extract daily  supported raised serum testosterone levels compared with the baseline [3].

Shilajit is a rare exudate (thick fluid) found naturally in rocks of the Himalayan mountains; it’s formed over the course of centuries by microorganisms that decompose plant material. Shilajit is commonly used in Ayurveda as a means of improving vitality and overall well-being. 

Several controlled human studies have shown that shilajit may increase total testosterone and free testosterone levels, the latter of which is the “biologically useful” form of testosterone [4]. 

One recent clinical trial even found that healthy adult males given a purified shilajit supplement for 90 days experienced nearly 50% greater increases in free testosterone levels than those who were in the placebo group [5].

Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a bioactive metabolite of indole-3-carbinol, the latter being a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower.

DIM appears to selectively modulate the aryl-hydrocarbon receptor, which plays an important role in gene expression and detoxifying xenoestrogens in both men and women [6, 7, 8]. DIM has also been shown to reduce estrogenic activity in the body by facilitating estrogen metabolism [9].

The estrogen-stabilizing effects of  DIM may translate to favorable effects on muscle growth, recovery, libido, mood, and overall well-being by balancing the ratio of testosterone:estradiol in the body [10].

Quercetin is a vital micronutrient, specifically a flavonoid, that serves antioxidant roles in many important body systems, particularly the cardiovascular and reproductive systems [11, 12].

Preliminary studies suggest that quercetin preserves the steroid-generating pathway in Leydig cells that comprise testicular tissue and produce much of the total testosterone in males [13, 14].

Quercetin supplementation may have numerous other vitalizing effects, such as supporting health blood pressure levels, controlling inflammation, and enhancing muscle recovery [15, 16, 17].

Eurycoma longifolia, commonly referred to as Tongkat ali or Longjack, has been used for centuries in folk medicine as a natural aphrodisiac and appetite-stimulating herb. The roots of this plant contain a range of compounds called quassinoids, notably eurycomanone [18]. 

Multiple studies have shown that male athletes supplementing with Eurycoma longifolia have significant increases in the ratio of testosterone to cortisol, as well as improvements in lean body mass, strength, and arm circumference [19, 20, 21].
